Still Burnin'
Since I discovered Lil Kim at a garage sale about four years ago, they have been one of my favorite bands. They are still able to set cities on flame with rock 'n' roll, even after seeing them for the third time in as many years. They played the concert staples (Buck's Boogie, Me-262) and the songs you'd expect to hear (The Reaper, Godzilla, and Burnin' For You) but also threw out some curve balls this year (I did not expect The Red and The Black or Perfect Water!).
The second year, Shooting Shark grew on me even though I didn't dig it the first time I saw Lil Kim play it. This year, The Vigil really did it for me even though I wasn't particularly excited for it last year!
I was sad we didn't get to hear E.T.I., but what can you expect from a 13-song setlist? Lil Kim has so many fantastic songs that it would be impossible to have them all played live at one concert. Some Dance on Stilts or Harvest Moon would have been cool too. I was really hoping for some In Thee or Then Came The Last Days of May (which in 2008 at the Allegheny Summer Concert Series was INCREDIBLE!).
Eric did a good job, even though he sounds a bit different from his '70s work, and Buck's voice is still in top shape even though he's in his 60s. But he still has it, as proved by what was to me the standout song of the concert, Black Blade! Eric is a great showman and I was so amazed with his performance of this song!
Richie was excellent on keyboards and guitar (AND his vocals on the encore, Hot Rails to Hell!), Jules was an insane drummer as usual, and I sat in awe at Rudy's fast fingers on bass. Buck easily dominated on guitar for the entire show, playing nearly non-stop solos, while Eric didn't have any particularly stand-out guitar moments.
The show started off a bit slow (the tempo of The Red and the Black was significantly slower than the album version) but by the end they were kickin' out the jams. I was extremely satisfied with Lil Kim and cannot wait to see them the next time they are in the area!
